Over the weekend I read a post by fellow Aussie blogger, J3w3l, where she shared some musings on mini-games in MMO’s.
She mentioned that, even though she doesn’t play mini-games often, she feels that they are important features in an MMO. Content like the Darkmoon Faire in World of Warcraft and the Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy XIV and their popularity amongst the player base seem to be a testament to that.
I remember when the Darkmoon Faire got it’s reboot during Cataclysm and my best friend dragged me along for some silly screenshots of us on rocking horses. I tried a few of the games, got myself the fish and killed Moonfang before wandering off to do whatever it was I was doing beforehand.

The Faire never really captured my heart and I only ever returned when I was levelling an alt so that I could get the experience buff from the carousel. Others, however, can’t get enough of the carnivalesque content and are there the second it opens.
I often can’t help but feel that, as great as these things are, they get repetitive and dull very quickly. How is trying to collect tokens any more or less enjoyable than grinding a dungeon? But, as Jewel states, there’s no right or wrong way to play, and it’s a good thing to have multiple ways for players to spend their down time.
Overall, I don’t begrudge their existance, even if mini-games are just not for me.
Now, it’s over to you. Are you a lover of mini-games in MMO’s, or do you think developers are wasting their time with them?
